Our Story

Paperweight for Dad
Paperweight for Dad, circa 1970.
That's an airplane.

So what does rocket science have to do with running a fabric shop? In the case of Emerald City Fabrics, the answer might surprise you.

We are Renee and Kent, the owners of Emerald City Fabrics. In a former life Kent was an aerospace engineer. Renee was a materials engineer and software developer. We found each other while working at The Boeing Company in the early 1990's. For over a decade we proudly contributed to our nation's defense, working on a variety of advanced aircraft and spacecraft programs. The work was always challenging, often demanding, but also very rewarding.

Kent loves cars and airplanes. Renee adores fabric and computers. So Renee compromised and decided that they would sell fabric using computers. Kent gets to play with his cars and will occasionally point excitedly at airplanes passing overhead.

So Emerald City Fabrics was born in late 2005 out of an ardent desire to achieve better work-life balance. Fueled by our technical skills, professional discipline and an unwavering commitment to customer service, Emerald City Fabrics grew quickly. So in 2007 we made the difficult decision to leave our professional careers behind.

Today Emerald City Fabrics is a leading multi-channel retailer of quality fabric, sewing and craft products based in Issaquah, Washington, 15 miles east of Seattle in the foothills of the Cascade Range. Seattle, also known as "The Emerald City," boasts a large, active community of professional and part-time artists, quilters, and crafters, as the wet winter months provide plenty of time for creative contemplation.

We feel incredibly fortunate to live and work in the great Pacific Northwest of the United States, one of the most beautiful areas of the world! And although we often wonder if we have indeed achieved work-life balance, our commitment to each other, our customers, and our business is as strong as ever. Creating and nurturing this business has truly been a labor of love for us.

Thank you for allowing us to share our story and we hope you enjoy Emerald City Fabrics. Please let us know if we can be of service.

Sincerely,

Renee & Kent
